Although mentioned only briefly in the Gospels (Matthew 27:32; Mark 15:21-22;
Luke 23:26) we remember Saint Simon and how he was compelled by the Romans to carry the
Cross for Jesus as He travelled to His life-giving Passion on Golgotha for our salvation.
Saint Simon, by his obedience to the Romans' command, exemplifies the obedience that we
are called to by Christ when He says, "If any man would come after me, let him deny
himself and take up his cross and follow me." (Mark 8:34)
Also mentioned
are Saint Simon's sons Alexander and Rufus, who were prominent in the early Christian
community, and his wife who was metioned by Saint Paul in Romans 16:13.
